Demo Reel 2011 from Carolyn Fisk on Vimeo.
I just put my demo reel together today and I may make some changes to it still, but I really should have done this a while ago. I think I was just nervous about not having enough work to put into one.Wednesday, November 30, 2011

helpful slap in the face
Quick sketch, reference used.
Also read a good article: Portfolio Reviews: Do’s and Don’ts . It was like a helpful slap in the face.

cat walk animation test
Cat Walk Test from Carolyn Fisk on Vimeo.
I forgot to upload this awhile ago, but this was one of the tests I was doing for the forest pan/cat walk cycle I was working on this past summer.
It still needs a lot of work because the feet keep slipping and the speed/smoothness of the pan isn't right. So I figure I just need to do some more inbetweens and fiddle with the settings in after effects. But I haven't worked on it since the summer because I've been caught up in putting together a portfolio and applying to animation/film studios... among other things.
I'll try and get back to finishing it up before too long so I can add in the other effects I wanted, etc...

Decided I should do more environments...but I also decided I should do more props, characters, and other things. So expect more stuff.

portfolio portfolio portfolio
I've really been meaning to update my blog more frequently but I always manage to find something else more distracting to do.
Since the beginning of September all I've been working on basically is my online portfolio and a secondary portfolio to send directly to studios. I really would like a job in the design/art department of some studio because designing characters, props, environments, etc... is something I would be really interested in doing. There are other positions at a Studio that I would like to do as well but I would need to spend more time learning other 3D programs, compositing, and VFX before applying to them.
Is this a career I've always been interested in going into? No, not really. Before I started at Emily Carr University I didn't even think about art as a career. Art was a hobby, but it was something I wanted to get better at because I wanted to eventually write and illustrate my own comic. But I knew I needed to get better at human anatomy, story telling, etc, before I even thought about starting a comic. So I started school with the intention of getting better at those things. Of course as the years progressed, I became interested in other avenues of art that I hadn't thought of before and began to learn computer programs I never knew existed - I mean if I think about it I've only been using photoshop for about 4 years now and 3 years ago I didn't even know how to make a teapot in 3Ds Max.
But if I skip ahead a bit, after spending about 8 months working 24/7 on my grad film, I started to remember how interested in film I was and how much I enjoyed coming up with the concepts for something. It also got me thinking that "hey, maybe I'll make another film someday". Working on my film also reminded me of the comic I wanted to start near the end of high school, which in turn reminded me of what really interested me about art.
I love creating characters. I love creating stories. I love designing things. I love creating art.
So I guess this post is more of a reminder for me that I love art. I need to step back sometimes and reminded myself why I am working so hard at something.
It's just a matter a proving to a studio now, that I can do any job they assign me, that I will always work harder then 110%, and that I would be an invaluable employee.
And also put more work into my portfolio to prove this. Which is what I will continue doing. But if I can't find a Studio job soon I'm going to have to find a part-time/full-time job somewhere in customer service again. But in the meantime I am currently working on a freelance animation project for a friend of a friend, and eventually I will be able to post some work from it. It's in a very different style from my usual work. Very cute and anime. Perhaps I should put more cartoony work into my portfolio *mental note*.
Anyways keep checking my online portfolio, there is always something new going in there every few days or so: http://cargocollective.com/carolynfisk
